After walking it off in the 4-3 in an extra inning win over the Red Sox last night, the Tampa Bay Rays look for a series split with Boston this afternoon. Tampa Bay notched a second consecutive winning home stand with the latest victory, as the look to finish the stand with a 7-3 record before heading to Houston.

The walk-off win was the team’s third this season, and the eighth time in franchise history the team won on a walk-off error. It also was the Rays’ fourth win of the season when trailing after seven innings.

Jake Odorizzi (8-5, 3.63 ERA) will get the start for Tampa Bay, opposite of Drew Pomeranz (10-9, 2.95 ERA).

Odorizzi boasts the lowest ERA in the American League since the All-Star Break (1.64 ERA). He’s faced the BoSox twice this season, allowing nine runs over nine innings. In his last start he allowed just one earned run on six hits and a walk over six innings in an 8-2 victory over the Rangers. He struck out four. Of his total 101 pitches, 65 went for strikes, with his only mistake being a solo shot to Roughned Odor. Odorizzi has been very good over his last seven starts, posting six quality starts over that stretch.

Pomeranz has allowed two runs or fewer in his last four starts. In his last outing he allowed one run on four hits over five innings Saturday against Detroit. He struck out three. The one run he allowed came on a James McCann solo shot, though a long rain delay knocked Pomeranz out of the game in the bottom of the fifth. He had thrown only 51 pitches over the first five innings, and now is 10-9 overall this season. He also has an impressive 2.95 ERA and 150 strikeouts in 140-1/3 innings this season. Pomeranz relies upon an 80 mph, worm-killer knuckle curveball and a whiffy 92 mph four-seam fastball. He’ll also mix in an 87 mph cutter and a hard 87 mph changeup.

— Tim Beckham is listed as day-to-day after leaving last night’s game with left hamstring tightness.

— Close to returning to the fold, Alex Cobb is scheduled to make one more rehab start on Saturday. The righty told Marc Topkin (Tampa Bay Times) it was his call to make one last last rehab start, then “sink or swim” when he rejoins the team. Cobb expects to start against the Blue Jays.

Cobb needed 81 pitches to get through four innings for the Bulls on Monday, allowing five runs on nine hits with no strikeouts. The 30th and final day of Cobb’s reassignment is Saturday.

In response, Kevin Cash said there have been no final decisions on what the starting rotation may look like with Cobb (and Chase Whitley) coming back, but a six man rotation is an option.

— OF Oswaldo Arcia, who was designated for assignment last week by the Rays, has been claimed off waivers by the Miami Marlins. Arcia will replace Derek Dietrich as the new makeshift first baseman while he recovers from a knee injury.

Arcia was just activated from the DL after recuperating from an elbow injury. He was out of options, thus the designation which exposed him to another team’s claim.

— Perhaps you heard that details about the redevelopment of the Tropicana Field site have been released. If you haven’t — and let’s be honest, you didn’t really expect the local media to cover such a story — we wrote about it earlier today.

Initial details on Tropicana Field site redevelopment released

On Monday, HKS — the architectural firm tasked with creating the redevelopment master plan for the 86-acre Tropicana Field site — released a conceptual model of what a redeveloped and reimagined Trop property could look like.

The potential location (pictured above) for the new facility is in the northeast corner of the property where U-Haul currently resides. It’s worth noting, the planning process has yet to be concluded, rather this a very preliminary idea of potential site layout. The stadium depicted in the model is not the actual design, therefore a conclusion of what a new facility may look like — be that of an open air stadium, a roofed facility, or some derivation thereof — should not be drawn.

The rest of the site infuses retail, office, housing and green space into the concept that, to borrow from Janelle Irwin (Tampa Bay Business Journal), shuts down artificial borders now created by a giant stadium and a sea of asphalt.

The open spaces — which could be used for arts, green space, trails and parks — would split the existing site from east to west, with another split bisecting the center north to south.

Part of the concept would restore Booker Creek which could be a focal point of the design. Booker Creek is not likely to be a candidate for activities on the water, however, due to its size.

The most important component of the redevelopment plan is the inclusion of expanded transportation and transit access to and from the site, utilizing the future Bus Rapid Transit planned for First Avenues North and South which would connect to the downtown ferry service set to launch in three months.

Another rather ambitious aspect of the plan consists of the elimination of Interstate 175, which would be turned it into a promenade boasting condos and storefronts — doing away with the literal and metaphorical barrier standing between downtown St. Petersburg and the economically disparaged neighborhoods to the south. That too could be achieved by creating an overland park connecting Campbell Park, bolstered by the forthcoming skatepark, to the redeveloped Tropicana Field site.

The concept is somewhat contingent upon the notion that the Rays will continue to play baseball at the current location – something that’s not guaranteed. The ball club is considering a bevy of potential sites on both sides of the bay. The site will be redeveloped with our without a stadium…although one with a new facility would be the operable outcome.

St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman — as well as those involved with the Baseball Forever campaign — is confident that the current site, reimagined and redeveloped, is the best location for Major League Baseball in Tampa Bay. In an ideal world, team leadership will come to the same conclusion.
