Hot-Stove: Rays Trade Kirby Yates; JP Arencibia, Daniel Nava, and Brandon Gomes Now Free-Agents

RHP Kirby Yates has been traded to the Cleveland Indians for cash considerations. Additionally, the Rays also released C J.P. Arencibia and outrighted RHP Brandon Gomes and OF Daniel Nava. Both Gomes and Nava had the option to refuse the assignment and did, becoming free agents.

With the Return of Alex Cobb Looming, Who Gets Cut to Make Room? (Updated)

The Rays could send Gomes back to Triple-A Durham in hopes he’d work through his recent found pitching woes. I’d imagine a move like this could be construed as a last ditch opportunity for Lueke to prove his worth. However, I’d also argue the release of Bell should have sent Lueke a clear message — his spot in the ‘pen isn’t a certainty, nor is it safe. After all, if Friedman and company were willing to eat $5.5MM on an underperforming Bell, there is a very realistic possibility that Lueke could be the next to befall the axe.

Looking Backward While Moving Forward: On Jason Bourgeois

As much as I’d like to harp on Hellickson or the Rays inconsistent offense that couldn’t get much started Wednesday night, I’m going to focus on something else, Jason Bourgeois — more specifically, why he’s still on the 25-man roster. He, after all, misplayed another ball in the outfield for the second time in three games. Though tonight’s fielding geek wouldn’t prove costly, and though he was fairly productive at the plate, I’d argue that he’s here (instead of Brandon Gomes who was sent down on the 20th) for a few reasons — the biggest being that he’s out of options and the Rays don’t want to lose organizational depth by running Bourgeois through waivers. One should consider the depth in Triple-A Durham. With Brandon Guyer on the DL, the Rays are left with career minor leaguer Rich Thompson, and Gary Busey lookalike Shelley Duncan.

The New What Next: Rays Beat the Pirates 6-2 and Head to Clearwater to Take on That Other Team From Pennsylvania

After dropping five consecutive games, the Rays got back on the right track Monday night, beating the Pirates by a score of 6-2. The Rays will make the hour and a half trek north today to take on the Phillies in Clearwater. Matt Moore had another shaky outing Monday night, lasting only 4-2/3 innings and …

Well, Someone’s Gotta Go…Right? Who Are We Going to Say Goodbye to When Joyce, Farnsworth, and Scott Return?

It goes without saying that with the imminent return of both DH Luke Scott, and reliever Kyle Farnsworth in the very near future, some folks have got to go in order to make room for them on the roster. The question begs: who will be optioned or designated for assignment? What’s more, are there any …
