The New What Next: Rays vs. Red Sox, Part Five ― A Series Preview

The Tampa Bay Rays returned home from a disappointing 4-5 road trip through Baltimore, New York, and Detroit. Faced with the dwindling hopes of a postseason berth ― hopes that continue to wither away with every loss ― Tampa Bay is set to start a three-game weekend series against the Boston Red Sox Friday night.

Looking Backward While Moving Forward: Rays End Series with 8-0 Throttling of Le Tigre

Jake Odorizzi entered Wednesday’s game with the lowest amount of run support in the American League. However, he was given run support in spades on this night, as the Tampa Bay Rays (68-71) tied a season-high, hitting four homers en route to an 8-0 win over the Detroit Tigers, completing a 4-5 road trip. With the win, Tampa Bay split the season series with Detroit at three games apiece.

Looking Backward While Moving Forward: Rays Drop Third Straight, 8-7 in Extras

The Tampa Bay Rays took a 7-7 tie into extras Tuesday night, and walked away with an 8-7 loss in 13 innings. It was an eventful game to say the least, chocked full of ugly pitching from both sides, a couple of awkward fielding gaffes, too many replay reviews, and more pitching changes than I have fingers on both hands. The Rays are now four games under .500 for the first time this season, as their slim playoff hopes continue to whittle away.

Yet for the second consecutive game, the Rays’ hurlers allowed the long ball to get the best of them. And though Tampa Bay twice came back from two-run deficits against Detroit, the Tigers went on to win 5-4. The Rays now are 3-4 on a nine-game, three-city road trip.
