Rays Spring Training Update, Day 20; Rays Win 3-2, Balfour is Back, Starting Rotation and Injury News

The Tampa Bay Rays followed a one run loss Friday afternoon, with a one run victory against the Baltimore Orioles, Saturday. There were a few noteworthy highlights; Nathan Karns tossing a perfect four inning start, and catcher Reńe Rivera’s two run, fourth inning blast to left field being just a couple. The Rays walked away from Sarasota with their fourth win of the spring, bringing their Grapefruit League record to a respectable 4-6-1.

Projecting the Rays 2015 Starting Rotation

I don’t put much credence into projections and predictions. With that said, projections can offer quite a bit of insight into a mathematically calculated outcome, whereas predictions are a wild stab in the dark by people who look at everything face value. Predictions rarely turn out correct (see the Rays predictions to go to the World Series last year) and projections, more often than not, warrant merit.

Projecting the Rays 2015 Bullpen

The Rays ‘pen has been in a state of flux this off-season. Gone are Joel Peralta and Cesar Ramos, two relievers many grew to love (or hate, you choose). They were also dealt a setback, albeit temporary, with the injury and subsequent surgery on closer Jake McGee. In turn, a few experienced arms have been brought in and to deal with the flux. As of now, a little more than a week before the start of Spring Training, as many as 11 players are vying for a role in the later innings.

Looking Backward While Moving Forward: Alex Colome Impressive in Rays 2-0 Win

I thought it would be interesting to compare the three pitchers vying for the fifth starter spot next season (assuming that Jeremy Hellickson isn’t traded in the off-season). In doing so, I looked that Colome, Hellickson, and Karns’ body of work over the last 30 days.

The New What Next: Rays vs. Indians — the Final Series

The funeral procession that is the Rays’ season will conclude this weekend in Cleveland, where Tampa Bay is slated to take on the Indians in a three-game set. Any hopes of a positive outcome to the season came to pass days ago, and we’re left with an overwhelming desire to just nail the coffin shut. Thursday night’s 11-1 loss to the Red Sox certainly didn’t help.
