As odd as it may sound, the Baltimore Orioles are set to start a three-game home stand at Tropicana Field on Friday. In turn the Tampa Bay Rays, clad in their road grays, will be the visiting team in their home stadium.

It’s been opined by more than a few, the Rays appeared to be in restructuring mode early in the offseason, yet they made several present-day improvements to put themselves in position to win in 2014. Matt Silverman put together a team that — in an ideal world — is deeper offensively, more athletic, and improved defensively. And while they were fairly successful during Spring Training (as it relates to wins and losses), the true test of the team’s mettle begins Monday, when the Baltimore Orioles enter the Trop for a three-game set.

The Tampa Bay Rays are back at it Monday night, when they start a four game series against the Orioles in Baltimore. While the Rays are coming off a series win against the Blue Jays, the Orioles faced a power outage of sorts on the north side of Chicago, where the Cubs held them a total of four runs over the course of a three-game sweep — their first road sweep of the year. The Rays will try to flush out the odd procedural inconsistencies that plagued the previous series, while the Orioles attempt to get back on the winning side of the ledger.

If you subscribe to the idea that the Tampa Bay Rays still have a shot at remaining relevant in the second half of the season, the two upcoming series’ against the Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankees are incredibly important. After all, no one has run away with things in the AL East — making an 85 win playoff berth seem reasonable — and the Rays have an opportunity to gain some major ground against their direct competition (to the tune of seven games) over the next six days. It all starts Friday, when the good guys head to Baltimore for a four game set against the Orioles, including a double header in the series opener.
The New What Next: Rays Welcome O’s For Three — A Series Preview of Sorts
I don’t feel comfortable in making broad proclamations; after all, we were wrong on a few different occasions when it looked as though the Rays might slip out of their funk. However, I will say it seems like the Rays may be turning a corner. Over the last few days, the offense has shown a push unseen since the beginning of May — FINALLY complimenting the stabilized pitching staff. Also encouraging, though they’ve fallen behind twice in the last four games, the hitters have been able to bail out the pitching staff and come back for the win. A moderate gain if ever there was one, the Rays have gone 4-6 in their last 10 games. Compare that to their previous 1-9, 10-game span. I’d call that progress.
