Noteworthiness

― Rays manager Kevin Crash trimmed the Spring Training roster to 40 after Friday’s game, reassigning RHPs Mark Sappington and Kyle McPherson and INF Juniel Querecuto to minor-league camp.

Sappington didn’t allow a run in 6-1/3 Spring innings, striking out four and allowing five hits and two walks. Cash noted the improvement Sappington has made over the last year, saying,

Sappington made some big strides last year, Cash said. He developed a cutter through Dick Bosman working with him, and we’ll see where it takes him.

McPherson allowed up four runs in 8-2/3 innings this spring.

He’s been beat up with some injuries, Cash said. He said he’s finally healthy, and it’s showed. He’s got pretty good stuff.

Querecuto, who made an impact when given the chance this spring, went 7-15 at that plate in 14 games.

Rosters have to be down to 25 active players by April 2.

― Tim Beckham told reporters his shin is still sore after getting hit by a pitch Thursday night, and he won’t play tonight. He, however, hopes to play on Sunday, probably in a camp intrasquad vs. Matt Moore.
