Why Sternberg’s “2022” Deadline Comment Means Nothing (Re-post from SOTS)
Here I was prepared to write a diatribe on Stu Sternberg’s heavy handed announcement that he will look for new stadium sites by 2022, with or without St. Pete’s blessing. Then it dawned on me, Noah Pransky (Shadow of the Stadium blog) wrote a short and concise piece on how Sternberg’s 2022 deadline is, essentially, moot — why not re-post that piece in its entirety? After all, it summed things up well, and casted shade on Stu’s glaring attempt to regain leverage in the Stadium Saga.
Mayor Kriseman, Rays Announce Pending Stadium Deal
In a press conference at Tropicana Field Tuesday afternoon, St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman laid out his plan to allow the Tampa Bay Rays explore new stadium sites in Pinellas and Hillsborough counties, with the hope of not only keeping them in the region, but in St. Petersburg. Making good on his campaign promise of finding a resolution that would benefit both the team and the citizens of St. Petersburg, Kriseman’s “memorandum of understanding” would give the Rays three years to analyze possible sites in Hillsborough and Pinellas. In kind, Kriseman and his staff are committed to making an aggressive pitch for a new stadium at another St. Petersburg location (such as Carillon/Gateway), on the Tropicana Field acreage, or a complete renovation of the Trop itself.
The New What Next: Rays Return to the Trop to Face the Blue Jays
It would be safe to say that Chris Archer needed a win Sunday. His last few starts — sandwiched between an excellent start against the Orioles on the seventh — left a lot to be desired. Archer seemed to be a bit over amped, and hadn’t been nearly as efficient as most knew he could, and should, have been. Archer quelled the fears of many a Rays fan Sunday, putting together an excellent 6 IP/6 H/1 R/1 ER/1 BB/4 K outing, leading the charge in a 3-1 victory against the Yankees. The Rays will use the accrued momentum when they return to the Trop Monday to take on the charging Toronto Blue Jays.
