The somber news broke last night that Rays RHP prospect, Matt Bush, was involved in, and arrested for, a drunk driving accident. It bears mentioning that Bush has battled with alcoholism for some time now.

This is not the first time his battle with alcoholism has reared its ugly head and affected his career. Bush had been released from both the Padres and the Blue Jays for issues surrounding his alcoholism prior to being picked up by the Rays organization. No word on whether he’ll be released by the Rays or not have been released. One would imagine that the consequences will be severe though.

Bush hit, and ran over, a 72 year-old motorcyclist late last night in Port Charlotte. The motorcyclist remains in critical condition after his head was literally run over by bush. Luckily the motorcyclist in question was wearing a helmet, or else Bush would be facing a much different scenario. Bush too fled the scene of the crime.

The Rays issued a statement late Thursday night: “The Tampa Bay Rays organization is deeply saddened by today’s tragic news. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victim and his family. We will reserve further comment until we learn more about the incident that took place.’’

Bush was taken to the Charlotte County Jail for fleeing the scene with serious injuries, driving with a suspended license with serious injuries, DUI with serious injuries, and DUI with property damage. Previously, Bush earned praises from the Rays for his recovery from alcohol-related issues that have threatened his career.
