Rays draft INF Richie Shaffer

The Rays selected infielder Richie Shaffer in the 2012 Draft. Shaffer, the 25th pick of the draft, led the Clemson Tigers this year with a .336 BA/10 HR/.480 OBP/63 BB.

Rated by several experts as the top third base prospect in the draft, Shaffer could be a possible replacement for Evan Longoria when his contract is up in 2014. But that’s neither here nor now. Besides, many see Shaffer eventually playing first base or in the outfield. So it would ultimately be too early to call Shaffer a replacement.

  1. It should be noted that BJ Upton was drafted as a middle INF and played in the middle INF for a little. So, it could definitely change for this guy. I like what they’ve got here.

Also to take note, Longoria has said he wants to be a lifetime Ray, so who knows what will happen with him. Plus, his free agency value could dwindle these next few years depending on his health. I can’t remember if he has played a full healthy season.

Just a few points, which I’m sure you recognized and knew. But i think this is a good pickup for the Rays looking at their pitching depth.

    1. For sure. In the end, they’re going to need him either in the outfield, or somewhere in the infield…especially now since Beckham might not be working out.
