The Tampa Bay Rays faced off against the Minnesota Twins at Hammond Stadium on March 5, 2013

The Tampa Bay Rays improved their Spring Training record in games against the Minnesota Twins to 3-0, with an 8-5 win Tuesday in Ft. Myers. They also improved their overall Grapefruit League record to 8-4 on the spring. Since I live tweeted the game, I won’t bore you with the gory details of Tuesdays matchup. You can pour over my inane on-field observations by visiting our twitter feed, located in the top righthand corner of the page. In turn, I’ll briefly recap Tuesday’s game.

  • First off, I took a slew of pictures at the game. You can see those photos, via our Flickr account, here.
  • Matt Moore really didn’t have a good outing. Moore’s ERA increased to 9.00 on the spring, following a 2-2/3 inning outing where he struck out two, but gave up two walks and two runs off two hits. Moore seemed to primarily throw a low-90’s fastball and change-up, while erring away from his breaking pitches. Moore got behind by a 3-1 count multiple times, putting himself in situations that he had to labor to get out of. I could be wrong, but I didn’t notice Moore throwing any first pitch strikes, something that he had a hard time with last season as well. He acknowledged that his poor outing was due to an issue with his mechanics.
  • Roberto Hernandez had another decent outing, though things fell apart for him in the sixth when he walked two and gave up an earned run. Matt Buschmann, who replaced Hernandez, also got touched up for two runs on three hits that same inning. In his 2-2/3 innings outing, Hernandez struck out three and induced three ground-outs and two pop-outs.
  • Juan Sandoval, who’s trying to make the big leagues after losing sight in his right eye in a hunting accident seven years ago, struck out one and earned the save – his second of the spring. “I felt great,” Sandoval said. “I feel like I’m getting better every day. I was just trying to keep the ball down, let them put the ball in play and see what happens.”
  • Stephen Vogt, yes that Stephen Vogt, had a big day at the plate, going 2-2 with an RBI and a run. He also flashed the leather to get out of the seventh inning, stretching to snag an errant, air-mailed, throw by Longoria. If only his spring training and minor league numbers translated to the bigs.
  • I know I’ve said it one hundred times or more by now – try not to look too deeply into things during spring training. Regardless of my sage wisdom, it was great to watch the Rays battle back from a three run deficit and win the game by three runs. The Rays really battled back in the eighth, scoring five runs while tacking on an insurance run in the ninth.
  • Leslie “The RBI Machine” Anderson had another run batted in the eighth inning. Anderson now has eight RBI thus far.
  • Bench coach Dave Hernandez called for a Figueroa/Guyer double steal in the ninth, and it worked perfectly. Brandon Guyer scored the insurance run from third after the double steal.

Tampa Bay has a rare spring off-day Wednesday, resuming action Thursday against the Pirates in Bradenton.

Tying Up A Few Loose Ends (Rays 3/5/13 Starting Lineup Included)

I'd reckon that the berm area could be a wonderful place to catch the Rays vs Phillies game, Saturday in Clearwater. So uh...lets make this happen!
I’d reckon that the berm area could be a wonderful place to catch the Rays vs Phillies game on Saturday March 9th, in Clearwater. So uh…lets make this happen!

There’s not a whole heck of a lot going on at the moment, so I figured that there’s no time like the present to tie up some loose ends.

  • It’s true, the Rays lost to the dreadful Red Sox today by a score of 5-1. But all’s not lost, Jeremy Hellickson looked great today, striking out four over three innings of work in the Grapefruit League matchup. You can read a recap of the game here.
  • The Rays will play in Ft. Myers again Tuesday, where they’ll battle the Twins ahead of an off-day Wednesday. Want to follow the action? Follow our twitter feed! I’ll be live tweeting round three of the Knutson Cup, starting around 1:00 PM. @BARaysFanSite is our twitter handle.
  • We’re thinking about rooting on the Rays Saturday, when Tampa Bay takes on the Phillies in Clearwater. It looks like the $17 Berm tickets are still available. Who’s game?
  • Ben Zobrist was ranked number 19 in the Bleacher Report’s Top 100 Players in MLB Today series.

The Rays beat the Twins for the second time this spring by a score of 7-2. They are now 2-0 in the Knutson Classic, with the next meeting against Minnesota on Tuesday in Ft. Myers.

Tampa Bay had a great showing all around. Pitching wise, Pricey and company struck out 10 batters while walking only one. David Price worked a three inning outing, giving up only one a hit and and no walks on 41 pitches (29 for strikes). Price, who worked on his cutter among other pitches, was very pleased with his performance today, reportedly crediting Jim Hickey for between starts work.

On the offensive end of things, Chris Gimenez hit a two-run homer, and Kelly Johnson had a two-run double which sparked the Rays offense. Matt Joyce and Wil Myers came up big at the plate as well. Joyce hit an RBI double in the fifth, and Myers blasted a stand-up triple thru the wind to deep center in the sixth. Myers was inevitably driven home on a Chris Gimenez sac fly to give the Rays a 5-1 lead.

Luke Scott was removed from the game for precautionary reasons stemming from a tight right hamstring after only one at-bat. “My hamstring just got a little tight. Just precautionary stuff, didn’t want to mess with it,” eloquently stated Scott. “The muscle’s just tight. I think cold day, a little bit of fatigue from working my legs.”

The Rays, who improved to 7-3, will face the Red Sox for the third time this spring on Monday in Fort Myers on Monday. Jeremy Hellickson will get the start on the bump. We’ll post the starting lineup when it becomes available.

The Rays Take the Orioles 4-1, and the New What Next (3/3/13 Starting Lineup and Noteworthiness Included)

The Rays are back on the right side of things, beating the Orioles by a score of 4-1. Alex Cobb had an overpowering outing, allowing only one hit in three innings of work while striking out five and allowing no walks. Of the 36 pitches Cobb threw, 28 went for strikes. The right hander showed marked improvement over his first outing of the spring against the Red Sox when he allowed two runs on four hits in two innings of work.

“Felt good,” said Alex Cobb of his outing. “Did my bullpen, worked on a few things from my last outing. … Carried it out to the game and I felt pretty sharp.”

Fernando Rodney was credited with the win following one scoreless inning, facing the minimum of hitters and striking out one. Rodney is projected to leave camp early next week as he will make his way to the WBC where he’ll play for the Dominican Republic. This happened to be Jose Molina and Ben Zobrist’s last game with the Rays prior to the WBC.

Offensively speaking, the long-ball accounted for Tampa Bay’s four runs. Yunel Escobar hit his first home run of the spring, a two-run opposite field blast off of Brian Matusz. Ryan Roberts followed that up by hitting his second Grapefruit League tater, giving the Rays a 3-0 lead in the fourth. Sean Rodriguez got his first hit of the spring off of a fifth inning opposite field blast to put the Rays up 4-0.

The New What Next: David Price is slated to start against the Twins Sunday at Charlotte Sports Park. Price will likely work three innings in his second outing of the spring. Also scheduled to pitch behind Pricey are Jamey Wright, Joel Peralta, Jake McGee, J.D. Martin and Felipe Rivero.

Noteworthiness:

The Rays made their first round of cuts Saturday, reassigning four players to minor-league camp: Nevarez, Paduch, Patterson, Schenk.

Marc Topkin wrote a really great piece on Chris Archer’s trek for self discovery.

Finally, head of the players union, Michael Weiner, made his way down to Port Charlotte Saturday and shared his views on the Rays organization, including his views on the stadium saga. Weiner had no sense of how the stadium saga would be resolved, though he said elimination of the franchise through contraction wasn’t a viable option — “I don’t think that’s the solution.” He also hasn’t heard any talk about potential relocation out of the Tampa Bay area. He also thinks that a new stadium on the other side of downtown Tampa (presumably near the fairgrounds) may be the best location for a new facility, as a means to attract fans from Orlando. However a recent Quinnipiac poll finds that the majority of central Florida baseball fans favor the Yankees, potentially contradicting Weiner’s idea on a stadium location. Perhaps those that find the Rays already in Tampa should listen to the fans who, time and again, have said they do not want the Rays in downtown Tampa, or in the fairgrounds region?

The New What Next: Rays vs. O’s (3/2/13 Starting Lineup Included)

The Rays are coming off of their second straight loss, this time at the hands of the Blue Jays. Tampa Bay was taken down by a score of 5-4, and they’ll attempt to rectify things in Port Charlotte this afternoon when they take on the Baltimore Orioles. A few Rays had a really good day, what more can you ask for in Spring Training?

Chris Archer threw three scoreless innings, giving up only one hit and striking out one. Joe Maddon was impressed with Archer’s outing noting, “He’s among the sharpest guys in camp right now.” Smells like a competiton for the coveted fifth spot if you ask me.

Desmond Jennings also had a strong day, reaching base three times while scoring two runs. Shelley Duncan went 1-3 with a two run homer, and Brandon Guyer went 2-2. I’d say they fared much better than they did on Thursday against Le Tigre.

The starting lineup and Noteworthiness are below.

3/2/13 Starting Lineup:

Zobrist RF
Johnson LF
Longoria 3B
Escobar SS
Roberts 2B
Molina C
Duncan DH
Loney 1B
Rodriguez CF
Cobb RHP

Noteworthiness: In a rather odd move, Sean Rodriguez will get the start in center field. “I’ll do my best, try to put a good either Desmond or Sam Fuld impression out there,” said SeanRod on Maddon’s placement of him in the field.

This afternoons game will be aired on the Rays radio network, as will the game tomorrow.

As per Marc Topkin, “Sounds like Rays will have first cuts today.”

Hey guess what? We’ll be taking the X-Rays Spex show on the road in T-minus three days. I’m heading to Ft. Myers Tuesday to watch the Rays take on the Twins, and I will be live tweeting the game. Our handle is: @BARaysFanSite. Seek us out and be a part of our verbal tomfoolery – 140 characters at a time! We’ll also document the game via this new fangled contraption called a camera.
