The New What Next: The Knutson Cup Round Four, Roster Moves, Luke Scott Returns, and More (3/11/13 Starting Lineups Included)

The Rays will take on the Minnesota Twins for the fourth time this spring, in their first night game of the Grapefruit League season. Tampa Bay is 3-0 in the Knutson Cup so far, as they attempt to pick up another win from Ron Gardenhire and the Twins.

On the bump for the Rays will be Roberto Hernandez, who has made a solid bid for the fifth spot in the starting rotation. Vance Worley will get the start for the Twins.

Tampa Bay cleared out the roster a bit today, reassigning or optioning eight players to the minors. Tonight’s starting lineups, the aforementioned moves, and other pieces of Rays related ephemera are below.

Hey, what d’ya know? Luke Scott is back in the lineup today.

Noteworthiness:

  • The Rays cleared some space on the roster Monday, optioning Alex Colome, Mike Montgomery and Frank De Los Santos  to Triple-A Durham. LHP Enny Romero was optioned to Double-A Montgomery, while LHP Felipe Rivero optoined to Class A Charlotte. Three other pitchers not on the 40-man roster were reassigned to minor-league camp: RHP Matt Buschmann, RHP Marquis Fleming, LHP Adam Liberatore.
  • Well what d’ya know, Luke Scott is back in the lineup in the DH role and hitting sixth. Desmond Jennings is back in there too, leading things off. Both are coming off of minor injuries.
  • Reliever Cesar Ramos returned to camp Monday following a stint in the WBC with team Mexico. Ramos, in an interview with Rays beat writer Marc Topkin, said the overall experience was good, and the brawl with Canada (was) both “crazy” and “scary.”

It’s time for the second edition of This Week in Rays Baseball. We’ll do our best to recap all of the happenings with your Tampa Bay Rays from the past week.

  • The Rays made their first round of cuts Saturday, reassigning four players to minor-league camp: Nevarez, Paduch, Patterson, Schenk. They’re expected to make their second round of cuts Monday.
  • Luke Scott and Sam Fuld both missed time because of hamstring issues. Scott should be back in the lineup Monday, though it’s unknown when Fuld will return. Fuld’s spot on the opening day lineup is not in jeopardy. Tim Beckham is out indefinitely, following an injury incurred Friday when he was hit in face by thrown ball. The incident happened Friday on back field at the Rays training complex. Beckham, who received stitches under right eye, noted that it was scary incident but it could have been worse, and expects to miss only couple days. Finally, Desmond Jennings rolled his ankle in Saturday’s game, though he should be back in the lineup Monday as well.
  • We took the show on the road Tuesday, where we watched the Rays take on the Twins in Ft. Myers. The game was great, the weather was outstanding, and I learned a valuable lesson when watching baseball outside: wear sunblock. You can read the tweet by tweet account of the game via our official Twitter feed, and see a scrapbook of photos from the game via our official Flickr photostream.
  • We got news Wednesday, that Mark Teixeira is out for 8-10 weeks with a strained right wrist. With the loss of big Tex along with the loss of Curtis Granderson, I think the Yankees are effectively neutered for 2013.
  • We combined forces with All Sports Talk as a means to dominate the blogosphere — I mean, contribute a piece on the Rays for their AL East preview.
  • Both Alex Cobb and Chris Archer had outstanding performances on the bump this week. The first Rays’ starter to be stretched out to four innings, Cobb allowed only one hit and walked none, while striking out five. He also induced five groundouts, which are his specialty. Chris Archer followed Alex Cobb and put up three shutout innings where he walked two, but didn’t allow a hit. Archer also struck out three in his 41 pitch (22 for strikes) outing where he posted a 54% K/BB percentage. True it may be meaningless since this is only Spring Training, but Chris Archer has a 0.00 ERA in Grapefruit League play. That’s pretty cool if you ask me.
  • Kyle Farnsworth finally took the hill for the Rays Friday against the Phillies. Farnsworth worked a 1-2-3 inning while hitting 92 mph on the stadium radar gun. He noted that there are no current concerns about his previously balky right elbow.
  • The Rays took on the Phillies for the second straight day Saturday, unleashing a 15-run offensive onslaught that gave Tampa Bay their eleventh win of the 2013 Grapefruit League season. They’ve amassed more Spring Training wins in 2013 then all of 2012. Oh yeah, this happened in Saturday’s game.
  • Ben Zobrist killed it in Sunday’s WBC matchup between the USA and Canada.
  • Rays primary owner, Stu Sternberg, noted that he is optimistic about his negotiations for a new stadium, but says nobody wants to hear him talking about stadium things so he will focus on baseball. So yes, dear friends, he talked about the stadium saga while trying not to talk about it at all.

Rays SS Tim Beckham is out indefinitely, following an injury incurred Friday when he was hit in face by thrown ball. The incident happened Friday on back field at the Rays training complex. Beckham, who received stitches under right eye, noted that it was scary incident but it could have been worse, and expects to miss only couple days.

In other injury news, Desmond Jennings expects to be back in the lineup Monday. DesJen was pinched from yesterday’s game due to a rolled ankle. Jennings said his ankle feels fine, and expects to play tomorrow if he’s in the lineup. “I’m good to go.”

Expect to see Luke Scott in the lineup Monday. Scott was pinched from last Sundays game for precautionary purposes after feeling tightness in his right hamstring.

Hey, what d’ya know? The Rays vs Sox game will be televised today! Brian Anderson, Orestes Destrade, and the crew were spotted having a pre-game planning session this morning.

Tampa Bay beat Philly for second day straight Saturday, this time by a score of 15-7. The Rays hitters seem to be coming into their own at the plate, scoring 15 runs on 16 hits, while stranding only seven on the base paths. • Niemann put up some pretty good numbers Saturday, giving up only one run on four hits, while walking none and striking out three.
  • Jeremey Hellickson on the other hand was not sharp in the least. Helly gave up three runs (all earned) on five hits and a walk in two innings of work, while struggling through a 34-pitch sixth inning.
  • The Rays got 16 hits on the day, including two from Shelley Duncan (including a homer) and Robinson Chirinos. Sean Rodriguez also went yard with a huge 2-run blast to left center in the third inning.
  • Leslie Anderson improved his batting average to .414 on the spring following another good day the plate. Anderson went 1-3 with two RBI, crossing the plate twice.
  • The Rays are now 11-4 in Grapefruit League play, one more win than they had all of last spring.
  • Nothing official from Rays on Desmond Jennings but word in clubhouse is that he rolled an ankle rounding first, and it wasn’t bad.
  • Mad props to the Hooters ball girl, who handed Shelley Duncan a ground rule double down the left field line. She didn’t realize the ball off Duncan’s bat was still in play. She fielded it and handed the ball to a fan.
  • Rays closer Fernando Rodney came in and ended the Dominican Republic/Spain WBC game on a strike out. Dominican Republic beat Spain by a score of 6-3.

The Rays are home in Port Charlotte on Sunday where they’ll take on Boston. Matt Moore is scheduled to get the start.
