Of Injuries and Acquisitions

The Injury List

Sean Rodriguez: The Rays have recalled SeanRod, putting him on the 15-day DL.

Brandon Guyer: Out for the season with a torn left labrum. Guyer will need surgery for the injury. As of May 29th, Guyer has been placed on the 60-day DL.

Robinson Chirinos: Chirinos is unlikely to return this season.

Jeff Niemann: The tall lefty is listed as day to day after leaving the game Saturday with right arm soreness. The culprit: inflammation in rotator cuff. Jeff Niemann will be out indefinitely following 3-1/2 months on the DL because of a broken fibula. It’s unclear whether he’ll be back this season or not. The Rays haven’t announced any corresponding moves, though it’s been whispered that Chris Archer may be recalled this week.

Moving and Shaking

Will Rhymes and Albert Suarez: Both Will Rhymes and Albert Suarez, DFA’d last week by Rays, cleared waivers and thankfully remain in organization.

Brandon Gomes, Chris Giminez, Cesar Ramos, Reid Brignac, and Rich Thompson: With the September roster expansion, the Rays recalled Brandon Gomes, Chris Giminez, Cesar Ramos, Reid Brignac, and Rich Thompson from Triple-A Durham. Since they were activated by the September first roster expansion, no corresponding moves needed to be made to make room for them on the roster.

  1. Was poking around the Durham Bulls website (something I never do and need to do more frequently) and noticed Leslie Anderson, the defector from Cuba. He’s putting up some pretty damn good numbers this season. He’s done well in previous Minor leauge levels, with an average season in AAA last year. I don’t know what his options are, but I’m gonna keep a closer eye on him. He’s a 1B and if Pena doesn’t clean up anytime soon, I’d like to see what this guy can do.

    1. If I remember correctly, Leslie was the big name thrown around toward the end of the 2010 season. The Rays acquired Kotchman prior to the 2011 season, as a backup first baseman because Anderson wasn’t progressing as quickly. When DanJo crapped the bed, the position was given to Kotch while Anderson continued his progression in Triple-A. With the acquisition of Pena, I was under the impression that he still wasn’t ready.

I wouldn’t think that he’d be up this season unless Pena went down…then again there’s Luke Scott, Drew Sutton, maybe even Kepp that could fill in. I’d think that if his offense and fielding continues to progress, he’d be seriously considered for 2013 since Pena probably won’t be back.

      I still want Trumbo though!

  2. Yeah, I definitely remember the name being thrown around. I don’t mind them holding him for a little to build a solid foundation for him, but he’s getting pretty old. I’d like to see him called up during the September roster expansion to see what he’s capable of. He can play outfield too, but that will never happen with the number of quality OFs we’ve got.

Trumbo would be an amazing acquisition, but would cost tons haha. I know people had mentioned wanting to trade Longo for Trumbo… and after seeing the amount of injuries, it’s starting to sound interesting, but sadly his value goes way down with that… which I guess could be good for the Rays when his contract is over. I don’t know, all speculative and wishful thinking at this point.

I would like to see the team trade for a solid middle infielder before the trade deadline, but the team needs to see where they are by then and chances at getting into the playoffs.
